10 Points Program

Woman and a child inside the waterThe 10 points program is a sequence of motor learning that focuses on postural control in swimming teaching. Ten successive steps lead the individual to experience and manage a variety of patterns of movement in different planes and around different axes to achieve a functional style of swimming (efficient and effective).

Therapeutic Halliwick is a concept that has changed over the years under the influence of concepts such as learning and development of motor control, because of that the sequence of 10 points was has changed as well. After the death of James McMillan, his widow was consulted and accepted the inclusion of sagittal rotation control, provided that should not have more then 10 points. Since in fact McMillan himself taught disengagement as an ongoing process, this point was taken out of the original sequence.. Thus, sagittal rotation control has been included and the nomenclature of lateral and vertical rotations was changed to longitudinal and transverse, respectively, nominated by the axis of movement. The disengagement appears as a constant challenge at every point.
